Great Barrier Relief – popular myths debunked

Great Barrier Relief – popular myths debunked

Practice Plan introduces some of the common myths that hold dentists back from introducing private dentistry to their practice and why they might not be such a problem.

In their pithily named ‘Great Barrier Relief’ booklet Practice Plan debunks some popular myths that may have deterred people from introducing private dentistry into their practice.

Making the choice to reduce or hand back your NHS contract can be a scary prospect. It’s tantamount to stepping into the unknown, something that would make most people feel uncomfortable. However, over the years we’ve noticed some changes to the dental landscape.

Patients

The access crisis post-COVID has seen patient attitudes towards private dentistry shift as many now see it as their only option of guaranteeing regular oral health care. The concern that too few patients would remain with their dentist as private patients if they left the NHS, is no longer the issue it once was.

The practice team

What about the team? Making sure they are on board is essential if you want a successful conversion. In the past some of them may have raised objections but more recently we’ve found that some conversions are actually being driven by the associates. If you’re stressed at having to meet NHS targets, chances are your colleagues are too.

NHS pension

If you’re worried what might happen to your NHS pension, then rest assured the pot you have already built up is safe. However, you will need to make provision for your future when you go private. Our friends at Wesleyan can help advise you on what steps you need to take to ensure your future financial security.

Other barriers

Other barriers addressed in the booklet are:

  • Concerns about negative publicity or a social media backlash (it can happen, but it will soon pass)
  • The response of your local health board (varies by area, but some are being helpful)
  • Whether you’re good enough to be a private dentist (of course you are!)
  • How to continue to contribute to society (volunteer or do things for free – because you decide your charges).
