Intraoral scanners – take the leap into digital in 2024

S4S Dental Laboratory explains why practices should be investing in intraoral scanners to take the leap into digital – and how they can save some money in the process.

It’s no secret that over the last decade, dentistry has seen an accelerating surge in digital development. With so much choice out there, it can be a little daunting to know the best route to take to help your practice take the digital leap.

Intraoral scanners have soared in popularity in recent years. This is largely because they are a more patient-friendly way to obtain impressions than traditional methods. An IOS system in place not only brings benefits for the patient, but for the practice too.

As advocates of digital dentistry for some time now, S4S Dental Laboratory has made large investments in digital dentistry over the years. It now has its own digital department with team of staff overseeing 20 digital printers on site.

The lab oversees the production of more than 1,200 printed models a day on average. The latest venture is a collaboration with Align Technology to offer certified pre-owned (CPO) iTero Element Flex scanners. S4S is the only supplier of these scanners in the UK.

Why go digital?

  • Patient convenience/preference – it’s no secret that traditional impression taking is generally uncomfortable for patients. Intraoral scanners offer a quicker, easier (and cleaner!) way to obtain impressions that can instantly be sent to your chosen lab
  • Digital records, no study models or storage required – clear much-needed space in your practice by digitising your model archive
  • Demonstrate to patient dental changes/wear on screen from scan to scan – packed with handy features, IOS can help track your patient’s dentition between appointments
  • Improved efficiency working with labs – immediate sending to your lab means turnaround times for digital cases are generally shorter. It also negates the need for any re-impression appointments
  • Material savings – cut costs in other areas and free up more storage with the reduction of alginate material, trays etc
  • Better time management – nurses can be trained to take scan patients, meaning you are free to use your time more efficiently.

Certified pre-owned scanners versus brand new

A CPO scanner from iTero has a major benefit – cost. With prices starting from just £9,999 with a one-year service plan included, a CPO scanner can be an excellent option for practices looking to make the digital leap.

Each scanner undergoes a stringent refurbishment process to ensure it is in tip-top shape and ready for its new home. It also benefits from the same support and warranty as if it were new. With finance options also available, a CPO scanner can be an excellent option for those looking to get started.
