Taking control of implant and oral surgery

Jo Dronfield, surgical specialist at NSK, looks at how advances in technology help to create an efficient and seamless workflow for implant and oral surgery.

Electric micromotors are an integral part of oral surgery and implant placement by giving clinicians ultimate control over speed and torque during surgical procedures and can facilitate speed increasing, 1:1 and speed reducing contra-angles with external irrigation.

Speed and torque have an inverse relationship – the faster the speed, the less torque, the slower the speed, the more torque, but whatever level of torque you need, it’s the control that really matters. So, when you need to drive slowly into bone during implant placement, the ability to control the handpiece and work safely is paramount.

Enter the Surgic Pro2

NSK’s ground-breaking Surgic Pro surgical micromotor has long been at the forefront of implant and oral surgery and introduced the world to NSK’s unique Advanced Handpiece Calibration (AHC). By calibrating the implant contra-angle to the micromotor, AHC guarantees accurate speed and torque control, which is so important in surgical procedures.

Now the launch of the new Surgic Pro2 has taken all that’s best about the original Surgic Pro and combined it with a range of outstanding new specifications including a wireless foot control and Bluetooth link to your iPad, Osseo 100+ ISQ device and the VarioSurg3.

The lighter, more compact motor has shifted the centre of gravity, so it is over the hand and away from the wrist, alleviating strain and fatigue during what are sometimes lengthy surgical procedures.

According to Colin Campbell from the Campbell Clinic/Campbell Academy, Nottingham: ‘When it comes to choosing the right surgical equipment, reliability is critical. Something I’ve always said about NSK equipment is you can drop it off a 10-storey building go down, collect it, plug it back in again and it still works.’

Simplifying oral surgery

The VarioSurg3 piezo bone surgery system is another essential tool in implant and surgical procedures including bone surgery, sinus lifts and implant site preparation. Designed for the selective cutting of bone, this system uses ultrasonic vibration, which reduces the chance of damage to the adjacent soft tissues such as mucosa, blood vessels or nerves.

The VarioSurg3 has a wide variety of ultrasonic bone surgery tips, each precisely designed to maintain cutting speed, preserve tissue and cut easily into bone.

Switching the unit from Surg Mode to Burst Mode creates a hammer drill effect capable of cutting through even the hardest of tissues, whilst three operating modes  – perio, endo and surgical – enable the user to pre-select the correct power range for whichever tip is being used.

Seamless workflow

The Surgic Pro2 can be wirelessly linked via Bluetooth with the VarioSurg3 enabling both units to be controlled via a single wireless foot pedal. This ability to switch seamlessly between these two surgical systems improves flexibility and creates an efficient workflow.

Furthermore, a stand or cart is available to house both units in a practical way and hides many of the cables.
