Dentistry’s game changers – Richard Field on Aquacare

Richard Field discussing Aquacare

To celebrate 25 years of Dentistry magazine, we’ve asked leading dental professionals for their game-changing innovation that shaped their career. In this article we asked Richard Field what his game-changing product is.

Richard has a keen interest in minimally invasive cosmetic dentistry, as well as general and aesthetic dentistry.

Richard graduated with honours from the University of Glasgow and completed his foundation year in Surrey.

He is an active member of the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (BACD).

Here he is a member of several committees, including the Young Dentist and Education committees.

Richard is a key opinion leader and lectures on treatment for the removal of white spots on teeth with Icon resin infiltration.

In 2014 Richard won overall Best Young Dentist UK at The Dentistry Awards.

He achieved 30th position in the 2015 Dentistry Top 50.

Richard was also an Aesthetic Dentistry Awards winner in 2016 and 2017.

Aquacare

Apart from my dental loupes, which I could not work without, the one piece of kit that I feel being without would compromise my day-to-day dentistry is the Aquacare.

Whether it is cleaning a fit surface of a restoration prior to bonding or decontaminating a cavity after preparation, I feel the job is only half done without this piece of kit.

Traditional sandblasters have been around for years.

But the Aquacare system, with the cutting fluid and interchangeable cartridges, is a much simpler and neater system to use.

One of my issues with traditional sandblasters is the lack of easy decontamination when used intra-orally.

With the Aquacare the whole headpiece is auto-clavable.

And, just as you would have a new highspeed between patients, you also have multiple interchangeable Aquacare handpieces.

The other annoyance previously came from switching between powders.

With the double unit you can have two powders at your disposal at the same time and switching between them is as easy as turning a dial, I most regularly use 29 micron aluminium oxide and Sylc.

The Aquacare gives me confidence day to day with the knowledge my adhesive dentistry is conducted to the highest of standards, giving the best chance of maximum longevity for my patients.
