Confidence in endodontic expertise

Why using premium endodontic files matters and why they are an important option for patient safety, value for money and peace of mind.

Running a successful dental practice involves more than just caring for patients and staff. Whilst clinicians provide highly-skilled treatments and patient care, there are now many more demands on their time and resources that can take them into areas where sometimes they could do with a little more help and guidance to prevent any potential problems.

Dentsply Sirona has been at the forefront of innovation in instrumentation, surgical and restorative techniques to ensure the best long-term outcome for patients. Our endodontic expertise comes from our long history of research and investment to provide the most reliable end-to-end solutions and state-of-the-art training and education. We pride ourselves on our quality control, with strict protocols in place to ensure we deliver the highest quality, predictable instruments every time.

Today’s clinicians have a range of endodontic systems to choose from with many claims from different manufacturers about resistance to breakage or file separation. One of the main concerns during endodontic treatment is the risk of broken or separated instruments in tricky canals. However, the latest file systems from Dentsply Sirona, combined with modern, flexible materials, have significantly reduced the risk of file breakage, whilst offering even greater resistance to cyclic fatigue, the leading cause of file separation.

Everything may not be what it seems

Every practice needs to operate efficiently and profitably, so it’s understandable that they want to minimise costs when purchasing dental products. The popularity of purchasing products online is a staple part of ensuring the best prices, but sometimes the products being advertised at ‘bargain’ prices are not always what they seem.

Smaller suppliers are increasingly infiltrating the market for endodontic products that are targeted at price. Files that look remarkably similar to premium products can give clinicians the impression they’re saving money, but there’s no mention of any proven research and clinical studies behind these products to guarantee patient safety in the long-term. If problems occur, especially underperforming files that unwind and require replacement mid-treatment, can result in additional costs, increased treatment time and a disrupted practice workflow. In addition, glue residues and poor surface quality found in some cheaper file systems can also affect cutting efficiency and significantly increase treatment time.

The endodontic file makes up only a small part of the cost of root canal treatment and neither the patient nor clinician should want to jeopardise the long-term outcome just to save money. Premium solutions may appear more expensive initially, but can work out far cheaper in the long run. The question is: can anyone really afford to risk the drawbacks of using cheap alternatives?
