Have your say on the GDC’s Standards for Specialty Education

The General Dental Council (GDC) would like to hear your views on its draft Standards for Specialty Education. The consultation will run from 1 May 2014 until 23 July 2014.

The Standards for Specialty Education outlines what the GDC expects of education and training providers delivering programmes that lead to a certificate of completion of specialist training (CCST) and individuals being included onto one of the GDC’s specialist lists.

By meeting these standards, providers will demonstrate that those who pass their programme have achieved the learning outcomes from the specialty curricula.

The GDC is consulting on whether the standards and underlying requirements are clear, if there is anything missing or whether they contain requirements that should not be there. It is also seeking to understand the impact the implementation of the standards will have on stakeholders.

The Standards for Specialty Education describe the areas of interest that the GDC has in specialist education and training programmes with 22 requirements under four standards:

• Protecting patients

• Quality evaluation and review of the programme

• Specialty trainee assessment

• Equality and diversity.
