The next generation

The award-winning Gherkin building, designed by world renowned Norman Foster in the City of London, was a fitting venue for Colgate to announce their latest innovation and entry into the electric toothbrush market to key decision makers and specialists in dentistry first.

Dr Anousheh Alavi, Scientific Affairs Manager, Colgate UK & Ireland, opened the proceedings by setting out the shared objective of devising solutions that benefit patients, which is of mutual interest to all present.

Dr Alavi set the scene by reiterating the findings of the latest Adult Dental Health Survey1 on the large proportion of the UK population who show early signs of attachment loss and the importance of taking action. Not only can we improve the oral health of this particular group but we also need to prevent the younger cohorts from entering this stage.

Dr Alavi went on to question 'what is it that our patients do when they are away from our clinics? Since on average patients spend longer on daily oral care at home, versus the number of hours they spend with dental professionals in a clinical capacity in a given year, this provides us with a great opportunity to work together to improve the oral health of patients'.

Dr Fotinos Panagakos, Colgate director of clinical research based in Piscataway, NJ, USA, then shared the journey that Colgate has taken to enter the electric toothbrush market to ensure it provides a unique, innovative and differentiated offering, while supporting or enhancing the toothbrushing experience.

The journey started with finding the right partner and Dr Panagakos introduced the global partnership between Colgate and OMRON Healthcare, explaining the 'unique combination of OMRON technology, with the oral care expertise of Colgate' now provides the next generation of electric toothbrushes.

'OMRON are market leaders in sensing and controlling in medical equipment. The sensors built into this new electric toothbrush actually sense where the toothbrush is orientated in the mouth to adjust the sonic frequency and the motion of the head.'

Dr Panagakos went on to present the clinical credentials for the new Colgate ProClinical A1500 toothbrush. Dr Panagakos said that “Colgate understood clinicians need to know firstly the product is clinically effective, and then that it will provide a benefit to their patients” The clinical support for the new Colgate ProClinical A1500 toothbrush extends from plaque and gingivitis studies, interproximal and subgingival access, to a unique ergonomic evaluation to deliver better oral health outcomes.

New Colgate ProClinical A1500 electric toothbrush improves plaque removal along the gingival margin* and interproximal plaque reduction**.
