Hygienist Diane gives thumbs up to bleaching course

Upwards of 40 dentists, hygienists and therapists gathered in Glasgow for the British Dental Bleaching Society’s two-day tooth whitening course, organised by the FGDP Scotland.

The first day of this course included lectures from BDBS chair Dr Linda Greenwall and American bleaching expert Professor Van Haywood, at the Glasgow Science Centre. Attendees learned all about various bleaching techniques, as well as the legislation surrounding tooth whitening treatments. Diane Rochford, a prominent dental hygienist based in London, had a lot of positive things to say about the event.

‘The lectures with Linda and Professor Haywood were very interesting and very exciting,’ she says. ‘One of the things the GDC say is that we have to be suitably trained to carry out bleaching procedures, so these courses are very important for anyone who wants to offer those treatments.’

Clinicians were given the chance to practise bleaching firsthand with an entire day dedicated to hands-on practical sessions. The day’s events, sponsored by Optident and taking place at the Glasgow Hilton Hotel, covered every aspect of bleaching, and delegates were even given the opportunity to practise on one another.

‘Everyone seemed to really enjoy it, and learned a lot from the day,’ says Diane.

‘We took dental impressions, making trays, dental photography, and different methods of taking shades which is really important for people practising bleaching.’
