Dental schools’ top talent celebrated

Featuring some of the leading talent from dental schools across the UK, the BDA/DENTSPLY Student Clinician Awards 2012 was a great success, and thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended the event held at the Royal Horseguards Hotel London.

The 2012 Student Clinician Awards is the only scheme of its kind, and actively encourages undergraduate research in dental schools as part of a worldwide programme.

The Awards’ sponsor, Dentsply, is a leading name in research and development and has been responsible for innovative brands.

To enter the Student Clinician Awards 2012, students were invited to create a small presentation (in poster form) based on any topic relevant to the world of dentistry.

The poster had to include the student’s own research and had to be presented to judges in a clear, logical and professional manner. The judges from this year’s event were

Professor Nairn Wilson, Dr Susan Hooper, Professor William Saunders and Professor Paul Brunton – all of whom are eminent names in dentistry, and respective leaders in their fields.

With only one applicant from each dental school in the UK, competition was extremely fierce, with the winner receiving a ticket to San Francisco to present at the 2012 American Dental Association conference, and also gaining a £10,000 research grant for their school.

The second place entrant won £500.

First place was awarded to Ross Leader from Liverpool for his presentation ‘Expression of Wilms Tumour Protein (WT1) in Human Epithelial Salivary Gland Tumours: An Immunohistochemical Investigation’.

Jonathan Lewney from Barts and the London was awarded second place with his presentation ‘Enamel demineralisation – is pH 5.5 critical for everyone?’.

A special prize was also awarded to Simon Crutchlow from Bristol, for the clarity and professionalism of his presentation ‘An evaluation of cuspal displacement with varying restorative methods’.
