Legal advice on hand for Olympic dentists

Dental indemnity experts are offering advice to those dentists and DCPs volunteering their services at London 2012

Following discussions with the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG), the team at Dental Protection will be on hand to help in the unlikely event that there is an adverse incident in respect of the provision of dental care.

Members entering into a formal relationship with any third party, either as a volunteer or for the provision of dental care (whether paid or otherwise) should advise DPL in advance of their intended participation.

In most cases, the existing subscription will be sufficient.

Those working in the salaried services will need to ensure that they are in a membership in a category which allows for clinical dentistry outside any employer-indemnified position.

DPL is aware that in a small number of situations, those providing dental services on behalf of LOCOG through the dental facility that has been built in the Olympic Park will be indemnified by the party with whom they are contracting for the provision of these services.

Those dentists are advised to check what indemnity is being provided for them by LOCOG prior to contacting DPL to ensure that there will be no gaps in their indemnity.

DPL’s assistance and indemnity for dentists volunteering during the games will be limited to matters arising from the practice of dentistry, rather than from any services provided of a non-dental nature.

Dental diretor, Kevin Lewis, says: ‘Dentists who volunteer to provide dental care during the games should continue to act within their competence (training, skill, experience) rather than attempting any new personal best.

‘A few moments taken to study the protocols laid down by LOCOG in respect of the provision of their services will ensure that their own method of working is adapted for the unique international environment in which they will be working.

‘It is a great opportunity for UK dentists to demonstrate support for Team GB and contribute to the international goodwill generated by the greatest show in the world. We are delighted to be supporting them.’
