The Faculty of General Dental Practice (UK) has set out new guidance for standards in leadership and management.
The guidelines are aimed at those providing leadership and management in the delivery of dental care.
But many of the competencies identified are relevant to other healthcare disciplines, making the guidance of particular use to Primary Care Trusts (PCTs).
The publication – Guidelines for standards in the development of leadership and management in the dental health sector – builds on the development of national guidelines for the appointment of Dentists with Special Interests (DwSIs) by the FGDP(UK) and the Department of Health, and the FGDP(UK)’s guidelines for standards in research.
It was developed by a working group with various expertise in leadership and management from across the dental and wider healthcare sectors.
Corporate organisations and dental practices, as well as dental professionals who wish to develop their leadership and management roles, will also benefit.
Changes within the dental care delivery system, such as the transfer of responsibilities for the commissioning of services to PCTs and increasing legislation affecting the provision of care, as well as higher patient expectations, have led to a greater need for individuals who can demonstrate the necessary leadership and management competencies to ensure effective delivery of high quality dental care.
