Magician will have dental team spellbound

A touch of magic is the theme to a study day dedicated to the art of ‘speaking without words’ being staged by the Faculty of General Dental Practice (UK).

All dental, medical and surgical healthcare professionals are invited to this FGDP (UK) annual study day being held at The Royal College of Surgeons of
England in London on 12 September 2008.

Sponsored by Denplan, this unique event offers delegates an opportunity to explore the interaction between themselves and the patient, providing in-depth insights into the narrative nature of clinical cases, the pitfalls of poor communication, and the art of ‘speaking without words’.

Themed ‘Cases, Communication, Conversation, Conjuring… As if By Magic’, the day will bring together expert speakers in what promises to be an informative and highly entertaining programme.

Delegates will hear from Mike Clarke, Raj Rattan and Brian Hurwitz as they
describe the principles and power of good patient communication, with demonstrations of how specific verbal and non-verbal communication techniques can help in managing difficult situations.

Michael Vincent, a sleight-of-hand artist and triple winner of The Magic Circle’s Close-up Magician of the Year, will bring a touch of alchemy to the day,
revealing how the success of any relationship is in direct proportion to the quality of personal rapport established at the outset.

He will also demonstrate the value and application of ‘active listening’, and show how to improve self-awareness and emotional intelligence.

Richard Hayward, FGDP (UK) dean, said: ‘It’s very exciting presenting what is certain to be an exceptional day.

‘I have no doubt that delegates will come away from the event enthused with ideas and techniques to help them see tangible improvements in their interaction with both patients and colleagues.’

The event, which is rescheduled from November 2007, is valid for five hours of CPD and costs £50, £100 or £150 for vocational dental practitioners, FGDP (UK)/Denplan members and non-members respectively, with discounted rates for dental care professionals and vocational trainee advisers.

Contact the FGDP (UK) on 020 7869 6760 or [email protected] to reserve your place.
