Teaching awards launched

The Dental Defence Union has opened nominations for its fifth annual educational awards.

Students and vocational dental practitioners have until 31 July to nominate the teachers whose approach has motivated and inspired them the most.

The dentist teacher of the year, vocational teacher of the year and dental care professional teacher of the year will be announced at a ceremony in London on November 7.

Winners and runners-up will be awarded £250 each and the overall winners in each category will also receive £1,000 towards the cost of educational materials for their schools or VT schemes.

Rupert Hoppenbrouwers, head of the DDU, said: ‘The high standard of dental education in the UK represents an important point of continuity in what is a turbulent period for the profession, so it is important that the work of dental teachers should be recognised and valued.

‘We hope that students will again take a moment to nominate a teacher who has particularly motivated or inspired them.’

Students and VDPs in the UK and Ireland can nominate a teacher by completing a nomination form, which is then reviewed by the DDU and a panel of judges. Those who submit an entry will be entered into a prize draw to win an iPod. The winner in the each category will be chosen following a presentation by finalists at the awards ceremony.

Awards will be judged across a number of criteria, including knowledge of the subject and ability to motivate. The awards is sponsored by Dentsply, while the British Dental Association is also supporting the initiative.
