Dentistry across borders: urgent volunteering in Namibia

Dentistry across borders: why volunteering is essential

Fadheelah Nadeem discusses her upcoming charity mission to restore smiles in Namibia and why she believes volunteering is not just an act of goodwill but a professional responsibility.

Access to dental care remains one of the most pressing yet overlooked global health challenges. For millions living in rural or underserved regions, oral health services are inaccessible or entirely absent. The consequences extend far beyond toothache: untreated dental disease can compromise nutrition, speech, systemic health and quality of life.

In October, I will be travelling to Namibia to volunteer with Mobile Smiles, a UK-based charity that delivers mobile dental care and oral health education to communities who need it most. Our mission goes beyond extractions and fillings – it is about alleviating pain, restoring dignity and empowering communities with the knowledge and resources to sustain their oral health for the future.

As dental professionals, we possess the skillset and resources to relieve pain and restore health – but with this privilege comes a profound responsibility. That doesn’t always mean travelling abroad; it can be through education, volunteering locally, or simply raising awareness. For me, this mission represents a commitment to utilise those skills where they can have the most significant impact – beyond the boundaries of well-equipped surgeries, and into remote settings where access to care is scarce and suffering is often endured in silence.

How does volunteering help the people of Namibia?

In rural Namibia, the reality is stark: even the most basic dental treatment remains largely out of reach due to an acute shortage of clinicians. Until just a few years ago, the country had no locally trained dentists at all. For many families, access to care is not a given, but a distant hope. The opportunity to change that, even for a few, is not merely an act of goodwill; it is a professional and ethical obligation to confront inequity wherever we can. Oral health – so integral to systemic wellbeing and quality of life – should not be a luxury afforded only to a few.

This mission reflects the core values of our profession: alleviating pain, restoring function and safeguarding dignity. Too often, these principles remain confined to well-equipped clinical settings, while millions suffer in silence simply because of where they were born. Initiatives like this are essential and reaffirm why I entered this profession: to make a tangible, meaningful difference where it matters most, staying true to the values that inspired me to pursue dentistry. For me, this trip is about stepping beyond the boundaries of comfort and privilege to serve communities where the need is greatest.

The impact of this mission extends beyond dental treatment. It’s about restoring dignity, relieving pain and equipping communities with the knowledge to sustain their oral health long after the mobile units have departed. Every patient treated, every lesson delivered, and every barrier broken creates a ripple effect – improving quality of life not just for individuals, but for whole families and communities for years to come.

How can you help?

This initiative is entirely self-funded and relies on the generosity of supporters to cover essential costs – dental instruments and logistical support that make treatment possible. Every contribution, no matter the amount, translates into tangible outcomes: relief from chronic pain, restoration of function and the return of something as simple yet profound as a smile.

You can support this mission via my JustGiving page here, helping ensure that every patient we reach receives the care they urgently need.

I approach this journey knowing it will be challenging, humbling and, above all, deeply transformative. In resource-limited settings, dentistry returns to its purest form: the human connection, compassion and commitment to patient care. These experiences restore our sense of purpose, reminding us why we chose this profession and what it truly means to serve, while compelling reflection on the values that underpin our profession. Such moments leave an indelible mark – not only on the communities we transform, but on the very heart of who we are as clinicians and as individuals.

Thank you for helping me take this step toward creating a lasting and meaningful difference. Together, we can extend the reach of dentistry beyond borders and ensure that the privilege of a healthy smile is not determined by geography.
