Avijit Banerjee announced as president of the British Society of Oral & Dental Research

Avijit Banerjee has been announced as the new president of the British Society of Oral and Dental Research (BSODR), which he describes as a ‘great honour and privilege’.

He currently holds three international honorary chairs as well as being a member of the board of trustees at the Oral and Dental Research Trust (ODRT, UK). He concurrently holds the post of hon. consultant adviser to the office of the chief dental officer, England, and is the editor-in-chief of the British Dental Journal Portfolio.

In 2022, Professor Banerjee was awarded the William H Bowen Caries Research Distinguished Scientist Award from the International Association of Dental Research (IADR). This was in recognition of his global scientific and clinical research impact in cariology and minimally invasive operative dentistry over the last 25 years.

In 2024, the BDA awarded him the John Tomes Medal to honour his clinical academic and scientific services, as well as his achievements to the profession and the BDA.

‘Enthralling, exciting pathway’

‘It is a great honour and privilege to be elected to the presidency of the premier research society in the UK oral and dental profession,’ he said.

‘Fundamental, clinical, translational and social science research all underpin the continuous development of best clinical practice and care to help our patients, whilst discovery science is an enthralling, exciting pathway for established and early career researchers alike.

‘I would like to say a huge thank you to Professor Simon Whawell for the concerted effort and great job he has done over the last two years at the helm of the BSODR and I’m sure he, like me, would also sing the praises of the amazing BSODR management committee who work tirelessly to ensure the BSODR stays at the forefront of oral and dental research in the UK.’

He added: ‘A very tough act to follow, but I will do my best working with the committee to champion oral and dental research across the oral healthcare team in the UK and beyond!’
