Philips launches new All-In-One brush head

Cosmetic, periodontal and hygienist experts share their experiences with the new Philips All-In-One brush head and their professional recommendations.

Philips Sonicare’s new All-In-One brush head is a premium, multi-faceted head, designed to brush away plaque, remove stains and care for gums in ways not possible with a manual toothbrush. This is Philips’ all-time best brush head, which achieves its best clinical results – and is being made available for free for dental professionals to trial.

Three leading dental professionals who have trialled the brush head share their initial impressions:

Chinwe Akuonu, general and cosmetic dentist

I have very sensitive teeth, and also have areas of gum recession. I used to scrub too hard with a manual toothbrush and have genetically thin gums, so after studying dentistry I am now very aware of being gentle when cleaning affected areas.

I’ve used an electric toothbrush for 10 years, but I never felt confident enough to use a classic electric brush head where I have gum recession. I would swap to a super soft manual toothbrush for affected areas, because even when using the most sensitive settings and sensitive brush heads I tried, the sensation was still too intense for me. Also, I worried I’d make the recession worse.

I was very surprised when I tried the Philips All-In-One brush head. I used it on the lowest power setting, but the head is so gentle, I now no longer have to switch between my electric and manual toothbrush. It’s been a game changer, I can brush without any sensitivity whatsoever.

I also used to struggle with cleaning the palatal surfaces of my upper teeth because of the shape. The brush head follows the anatomy of the teeth, and is much easier to use compared with others I have tried.

‘The All-In-One brush head has blown my mind’

The sensation of cleanliness at the end is brilliant too. I think that’s because I can now reach areas of the mouth I’d always struggled with. I feel like brushing my teeth a hundred times a day.

The All-In-One brush head covers a large surface area, compared with the small round head of a classic electric toothbrush. I can brush two to three teeth at a time, depending on their size, which gives me more time to spend brushing every tooth. It is very easy to manipulate around your mouth. I still have wisdom teeth, and I can rotate the brush head very flexibly around the last tooth, and am able to clean the distal edges.

My patients have also found the All-In-One brush head more gentle, and the size of the brush head makes the transition from a manual brush easier. The All-In-One brush head has blown my mind.

Devan Raindi, periodontist

As a periodontist, my focus is on my patients’ gum health. I find this kind of brush head makes it easier for my patients to do a better cleaning job. They’ll notice their gums feel healthier, with less bleeding.

The Philips All-In-One brush head is very thorough in getting as close in between the teeth as possible. The shape of the brush head is similar to a manual brush, which will help when transitioning patients from a manual to an electric toothbrush. When the bristles are activated, I can see their movement, and how they expand to cover a larger surface area.

I’ve personally been trialling my Sonicare with the All-In-One brush head, and have found it to be very positive for removing plaque. It provides a very effective clean, most importantly at the gum line.

For patients with gum recession, its very easy to lose control of how hard they are brushing along the gum line. Using a brush with a pressure indicator gives immediate feedback to the patient, to help them ensure they are not overly brushing the gums and potentially exacerbating their gum recession. The evidence suggests that using an electric toothbrush, like Sonicare, helps patients get better control of their plaque score, compared with a manual brush. It’s easier to get a high quality clean.

Sakina Syed, dental hygienist and dental therapist

The new Sonicare All-In-One brush head is perfect for reaching the lingual surfaces of posterior teeth, and hard to reach areas. For example, in my mouth I have a crown. I find the brush head gets all the way inside and to the back of the mouth to clean this area effectively, but gently. I would also recommend the brush head for patients who have had teeth removed from the back. This area can be particularly challenging to clean, and the size of the All-In-One brush head means it can fit the posterior teeth effectively.

The Philips All-In-One brush head has triangular bristles, which lock together like a key. The bristle length and thickness mean they hit all the different surfaces of the teeth, especially if patients have crooked or overcrowded teeth. The superior bristles also help with staining, and I think they would be good for patients with gum recession too.

When used correctly, and it’s easy to teach patients how to use this brush, you can feel the bristles going along the gum line into the gingival margin, and into the sulcus. This is where the plaque and biofilm is, and it’s imperative to disrupt for good oral health. What stands out to me with the All-In-One brush head is the way it moves around the lingual and distal surfaces of the last molars. It would be a very good option for patients who have furcation involvements of the upper or lower molars.

All for one and one for all

The angled bristles of the Philips All-in-One brush head help remove up to 20 times more plaque,* whilst providing flex to compensate for any excess pressure exerted by the brusher. The triangular tips can remove up to 100 percent more stains in less than two days* and the longer bristles provide a deep clean for gums, which as a result, ensures the gingiva is up to 15 times healthier.*

The new All-in-One brush head has been designed to provide complete care, helping Sonicare users to achieve cleaner, whiter teeth and healthier gums more effectively. The brush head fits every Sonicare toothbrush, so patients can upgrade their brushing efficiency without changing their brush.
