Last month, Christie & Co released its annual Business Outlook report, with the theme being ‘finding clarity’. The company held a memorable launch event for the report at the British Museum, with keynote speaker Robert Peston hosting the panel discussion.

The event was a chance to hear about the market predictions for eight different sectors, from hospitality to dentistry. And it was clear that the dental market was booming in 2022.

However, speaking of NHS dentistry, chairman and global managing director Darren Bond noted, ‘These sectors will have added pressure in the next 12 months’ due to the requirement of public sector funding.’

Simon Hughes, managing director of medical at Christie & Co, said that NHS and private dentistry are like two different sectors. However, ‘demand for good quality businesses will stay robust’.

On that note, Robert Peston added that ‘there’s no growth without a confident, thriving private sector’. And that is exactly what we’re seeing within dentistry.

Feeling optimistic

In a sentiment survey conducted by Christie & Co, the dental sector appeared to be the most optimistic going into 2023.

Sustainability was also a focus point of the discussion, with the panel agreeing that businesses will be forced to find ways to become more sustainable due to increased energy and supply costs.

Speaking to Dentistry, Paul Graham, head of dental at Christie & Co said: ‘The night has been a really good insight into all the sectors that we work within. I specifically work in the dental sector, but to see the other sectors performing well is also really encouraging.

‘I think some of the challenges that we see are also consistent throughout the sectors. This is always reassuring in that it’s not just exclusively contained within dentistry.

‘Generally speaking, I think the market is recovering well. There are hurdles to overcome this year, but with the momentum that we’ve got and these businesses being better businesses than they’ve ever been as a result of the pandemic, they will be in a good place to future-proof themselves.’

Ancient artefacts and appetisers

After gathering valuable insight from the panel of managing directors of different sectors and Robert Peston himself, attendees gathered in the beautiful Egyptian sculpture gallery for drinks and canapés. It was a night to remember for all.

‘It’s just great to be out and see people again. The last couple of years, we’ve had online events, so it’s just great to be back in London’, said Jonathan Watson, director at Christie & Co in the north.

‘Seeing everyone face-to-face and having the presenter Robert Peston, it was very interesting to get that insight from him.

‘In terms of dentistry, as we’ve seen tonight, we’re in a needs-based sector. People always need their teeth cleaned and sorted out. So, we’re very positive. There’s lots of demand. Banks like dentistry, buyers like dentistry. We’re in a very positive space’.
