As we all know, successful treatment outcomes in the management of periodontal disease rely on motivating patients to provide very high standards of oral hygiene.
Many patients presenting with periodontal disease therefore fall short of the standard required to allow us as clinicians to achieve the best possible results from our treatments.
Consequently, motivating patients to change their behaviour and adopt home care techniques is one of the biggest challenges. Therefore without successful behaviour change, many of our treatments will be in vain.
In this dental webinar, Ian will look at what clinicians can achieve with oral hygiene alone. He’ll look at the evidence base behind the recommendations we make to our patients and the science of behaviour change. This will help to get patents doing more so that clinicians can have successful periodontal treatment outcomes.
More about Ian Dunn
Ian qualified from Leeds in 1998 and went into general practice in the north west. In 2001, Ian received membership of the Faculty of General Dental Practice. In 2002 he joined the teaching staff at Liverpool Dental Hospital in the periodontology department. Here he became the undergraduate teaching lead in periodontics and a senior clinical teacher in periodontics, a role he held for five years until leaving that position in 2018. In 2010 he completed his MSc in periodontology and in 2013 he was admitted to the GDC specialist list in periodontics.
Ian is the perio lead for the Faculty of General Dental Practitioners. He runs the short course in periodontics and leads the perio components of the FGDP restorative diploma.
Ian spends three days a week in private practice in the north west of England. Here he takes referrals for all aspects of periodontology. He is also the British Society of Periodontology regional representative for Merseyside and Cheshire, and serves on the council as commercial liaison officer. In 2014 he was also elected to the BSP faculty.
