Dentist Kevin O’Brien is new GDC chair

Kevin O’Brien has today been elected as chair of the General Dental Council (GDC) with immediate effect.

He takes on the role in a permanent capacity, replacing Derek Prentice who was elected Deputy Chair earlier this year. Kevin has been an appointed registrant member of Council since 2009.

Kevin said: ‘I am very pleased to have been elected Chair of the GDC and I look forward to leading this experienced and talented Council in public protection – our key role. I look forward to working with my fellow Council members and the Executive as we make decisions to support improvements in Fitness to Practise and deliver important projects such as the reviews of Standards and CPD.’

A dentist, Kevin O’Brien was born in Edinburgh and is now based in Manchester Dental School where he is Professor of Orthodontics. He was the dean of the dental school from 2004-2007 and associate dean of the Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences from 2007-2010.

He has previously worked with the GDC in the roles of chair of the specialist dental education board and a member of the strategic review of undergraduate training. He has also been Chair of the GDC’s Education Committee.

Among other things it is the role of the Chair of the GDC to ensure all members have an opportunity to express their views at Council meetings. As Chair, Kevin will be in post until 30 September 2013 or until an appointed Chair takes over, whichever is the soonest.

The Council of the GDC consists of 24 members – 12 lay and 12 professional (7 dentists and 4 DCPs). There is currently one registrant vacancy. The Council is fully appointed and its job is to ensure the GDC carries out its core functions efficiently and in ways that ensure the safety of patients.
