US food bosses have updated their health guidance over dental amalgam.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is now advising that amalgam poses health risks to pregnant women, children and the unborn.

The move follows a recent lawsuit there.

Following the settlement of the lawsuit earlier this month, the updated consumer advice now states that: 'Dental amalgams contain mercury, which may have neuro-toxic effects on the nervous systems of developing children and fetus.'

'Pregnant women and persons who may have a health condition that makes them more sensitive to mercury exposure, including individuals with existing high levels of mercury bioburden, should not avoid seeking dental care, but should discuss options with their health practitioner.'

The update follows a lawsuit brought against the FDA by a team of four non-profit groups (including Moms against Mercury), two public officials, three dental experts, and two consumers describing themselves as ‘victims'.
